THEORY OF THE FOUR BALL

Areh Wah. Swoosh called mes yesterday and forwarded me the comotion that has been unfolding regarding the Houghton Golf Day and the ROUND or PLAY OF THE DECADE. In a Nutshell the winners have been cited for Cheating and members,patron and community spokesman are ANGRY. AREH WAH Can such cheating take place. They see that this form of cheating was so blatant that you can get shy. Not since Ghandi came to SA that such cheating has taken place. And for a Mosque Charity. I know in my times me and Saleem Bha saw toppies make a hole in their pocket and drop the ball in, cheat on Score. But so blatant. Areh Wah no Man. Thats like slog sweeping and then telling the umpire you didnt get a nick

We were not present at the day but Swoosh told me He got an email and the sender prefers to be anonyomous. It said

Dear Swoosh

“Dear Swoosh0018. Id like to bring you up to date on the events that unfolded on Sunday at the Houghto Golf Day. The objective eas to raise funds for a Masjid. The winners shot rounds  and scores that blatantly suggests they cheated. What Im saying is that has integrity in sports gone to such a level that members and friends should resort to cheating.  Then it says I am gobsmacked that cheating off such magnitude exists. . The beahviour and conduct as sportsmen was atrocious on behalf of those that shamed honour. Even at the awrds they acted like nothing happened amidst the cheers and jeers. On a day of the million dollar and a day that Woods won these local amateurs shot rounds worthy of CNNS play of the day and possibly the Decade. Please publish this so people can be aware that sports and honour has gone down the toilet”

Strict adherance to the rules differs among golfers, and differs according to circumstance. Many bend or break the rules when playing a friendly round with a regular group, but those same golfers likely adhere to the rules – and the honor system – in a tournament or more formal setting.
Then there are those golfers who can’t help themselves – who claim to be honest but bring out the ol’ foot wedge when they think nobody is looking. And who deny it when caught. Yeah, those guys. Here’s your chance to tattle. What is the worst golf cheating you’ve witnessed? (Please don’t use real, full names – just what they did.) Tattle on a Cheat!

‘Champion Golfer’
He cannot help himself, he always handicaps his so called mates so he can give them the NAGA and this year he won the “CHAMPION GOLFER” title that he presented to himself. —Guest Rich River

Never in the HOLE!
I like the guys who play 18 holes and never once put the ball in the hole. Every hole they pick up their ball or knock it away if its within 7 feet or so. And to top it off, they take several what they call mulligans. Oh, and I almost forgot, they move their ball 2 or 3 times before each shot to improve their lie. And then of course, they shoot somewhere in low 80s. I can’t understand how anyone can play a full round of golf and never hole out once. I thought that was the main objective of the game.—Guest Big Drive 1

The ‘eagle’ has landed
Played in a senior medal. A guy better than me with a low handicap hit 3 balls out of bounds off the first tee, all clearly OB. Then he threw his club at the bag and says he NR’s but is still going to play. Walks up to next to the green, drops a ball and claims it is his first ball. Then chipped in. PAT Test cheater
To get your card as a professional, you must pass the PAT ( Playing Ability Test) by completing 36 holes under 10 over. I was taking my PAT with three other guys. On the third hole, a guy hits his shot out-of-bounds and into a yard adjacent to the course. He does not play a provisional and goes into the yard and finds his ball. In the yard, there is a cement walkway to the back door of the house. The guy claims that since the walkway impedes his stance – he is able to take relief and then walks about 15 yards and drops his ball in bounds. We told him to play a provisional or WD. Sandbagger caught
How about a guy who has posted 40 scores, none better than 74. Handicap index 5.4. He got 3 strokes in the club’s postseason 9-hole shootout. As it turns out, in real life, seven of his last 20 rounds have been under par. His group keeps them in a book. It figured to a 0.9 index. (We did the math). POINT 9!!!!! No conscience whatsoever. Deserves no respect! And first prize was worth more than $700 at the club. But he didn’t even win. The club champ, whose BEST score posted was a 75, won. Seems his 68 in the club championship or any of the other sub-par scores he has shot were not deemed worth enoughy (or bad enough) of being posted. And HE was getting two strokes a side. An undeserved two strokes at that! We need a sign that says “Sandbaggers Will Be Executed!” Instead, here (I’m not saying where, because ya’ll know) where a culture of cheating exists, they are simply tolerated. IKIC (I Know It Cleared)
I played with my boss “The Bull” in a 4-man scramble. I didn’t know the other two players, only that they participated in this weekly scramble that paid cash to the top 3 places. The debacle began on a par-4, which was protected by a watery swap. To clear the swamp would require a player to carry his drive 320-yards. We all hit lay-up shots well short of the mote, while “Bull” stated he could clear the swamp. His tee shot went about 250-yards with a slight snapper into the abyss. When we approached the 3-balls that were in play, Bull remarked that “I Know It Cleared” and refused to believe that his ball was lost. He then insisted on conducting an all out search on the other side of the swap and had the nerve to walk all the way up to green to locate his ball. As the others waited in the fairway, Bull “auto-dispensed” a ball from his pocket and waived to our teamates that he had located his ball. I was shocked! A money game and this guy is cheating. —Guest Bull Killer

Shave 10 strokes
I once worked/played golf with a 4-some. One of the guys just happened to be my boss. On the 10th hole-Par 4 at his home course, he pulled his tee shot over 30-ft cypress trees into the swamp. Some how he finds his ball in-bounds, 20-yards directly behind my ball. Second shot hit a tree. Third shoot in the bunker. Fourth shot, I watch him swing and the ball remains in the bunker. He then reaches down while checking to see if anyone is looking and “hand wedges” out of the bunker. Then proceeds to 3-putt. I alway keep the score, so I asked him what he got on the hole. His response, without hesitation is bogey 5. This is a guy that constantly tells us he shoots in the 70’s; however he can only produce those rounds when he plays by himself! Needless to say, we don’t play with him anymore!—Guest Bull Killer

Once I saw this guy hit out of the sand trap, he nailed a fellow competator in the shin with his ball, it bounced up within 2 feet of the pin. He then missed the putt so he could keep his handicap up, can you believe that?—Guest Rules Committee

OB and bad drop
In a local competition I had already hit my tee shot OB on a par 5 and had taken a stroke and distance penalty. My opponent’s third shot carreens to the right into a hedge marking the OB. At that particular spot there is a break in the hedge with a chain link fence preventing players from going through to the sidewalk and roadway. There is also a tree on the course lateral and a little in front of the gap. His ball is on the far side of the hedge almost to the sidewalk, well behind the line of the fence. He declares the ball unplayable and retrieves his ball with a ball retriever and then places it well in front of the tree much closer to the hole. He chips on and says he got a six whilst I ended up with 8. I think he was OB because he was on the other side of the fence. Even if he wasn’t he should have placed his ball within 2 club lengths of where it lay, no closer to the hole (which would have put him behind the tree), not 2 club lengths in front and 4 from the original lie!—Guest Hacker

Most Golfers are cheating
I’m writing from Germany, so I don’t know how it’s in other countries, but there are so many guys just cheating a little bit like when they mark their ball, they just put it back and its an inch closer to the hole. I mean if they miss they had missed it anyways, even with an inch further away..but still it’s cheating.—Guest luma

disappearing balls
The other day in competition my opponent lost his ball with his 2nd shot, but instead of going back to where he played his shot he dropped his ball where he was. Then on green my ball mysteriously disappeared. After the 5th hole it re-appeared out of my opponent’s bag. To say I was speechless grossly understates what Ithought.—Guest shug

Cheater
At a four-man scramble, a group of guys hid in the woods then came out to turn their card in for a 51. They forgot they had purchased hole in one chances on a truck on the 8th hole. And wanted a refund for not using the tickets. Guys had the nerve to try to take first place before 12 staff members who said they never saw the guys hit. After being challenged they accused several people of cheating.—Guest Pedro

Cheating Brothers
I was playing a Junior Open Competition at a local club and there were 2 brothers playing in the same group, one off 12, and the other off 36 (but he was playing off 26 for the day as it was the handicap limit for the competition). There were around 80 people playing, and the best score that had come in was 43 points by a 19 handicapper, which was very good scoring. Then the 2 brothers come in, the older one off 12 had 45 points which is 3 over on a course he never played, and the younger brother had 48 off 26 which is 14 over. That was absolutely impossible. We found out that they had marked each others cards, and they made the other person in their threeball mark his own. I think this was the worst example of cheating ever shown off in any competition, and when we confronted them about it they denied it and left the course grounds straight away, but yet they still got their prizes for 1st and 2nd, which was even more confusing.—Guest John

All 10-footers are GOOOD!
I have a buddy who cheats two ways: a) he gives himself anything within 10 feet – simply whacks at it with one hand. If the ball goes in, he’s made his putt. If it doesnt, he says he was just messing around putting it one-handed and would have made the putt if he had taken the time…uhm right!! The other way he cheats is pretending not to understand the ESC system and if he has a blow-up hole, never give himself more than a bogey. Oh, and he pretty much makes sure that he keeps score for the rest of the group each time so that he can tweak his score even more. No shock that he always scores better than anyone in our foursome! Now an ongoing joke amongst the group with no one taking his vanity handicap as real. —Guest Freddy Fink
